How Do I Tell People I Am Considering An Adoption Plan For My Baby?

If you are facing an unplanned pregnancy and considering giving up your baby for adoption, you deserve to have people in your corner to support and encourage you. You need people who understand you are not giving up your baby, but making a loving plan for you and your baby. You may have concerns about how to tell people the options you are considering. We, at Lifeline, can help you have those conversations with friends, family members, or even the father of the child. We will walk you through the process, explain your rights, and answer any questions you have.

Sometimes it can be hard for others to understand. While family and friends have good intentions, they may make genuine promises of help that they are unable to keep. It is important that you surround yourself with positive and encouraging people during and after your pregnancy, while also having the opportunity to think through future plans and what is best for you and baby. It is good to listen to people you trust and seek their input, like family, trusted friends, and experts like Lifeline. The most important thing to remember when making a decision about your pregnancy, is that it is your decision to make, not someone else’s.

A few tips from Lifeline when telling trusted friends and family:

  • Explain common misconceptions about adoption
  • Share what kind of trained, educated couples looking to adopt you can choose from
  • Explain that you choose how much communication and interaction you want with your child after the adoption, and what open adoption is
  • Share the goals and dreams you want to pursue
  • Discuss that this is not a last minute adoption plan, but your worker takes their time to make sure you feel confident
  • Share the long-term plan for yourself and your baby

You may want to understand these things better yourself! Contact a pregnancy counselor without any commitment. She will hear your hopes and desires, fears and concerns, and explain every part of putting a child up for adoption. We are here for YOU. Our pregnancy counselors do not work for adoptive parents; they work for YOU. Lifeline has trusted families that Lifeline has trained, prepared, and approved for adoption, and we can help you look through families looking to adopt so that you can find the family that you want for your baby.

Whether you work with us from the moment find out you’re pregnant, or if you need to make a fast adoption plan, we will be there to support you in your decisions.
